Bodywork

Another approach to stress reduction doesn’t involve the brain at all.  In fact, it emphasizes quieting the mind. Bodywork releases the body of stored stress, often without changing anything else.  It is a particularly effective strategy when the stressor cannot be changed or modified. Yoga practitioners have long known that negative energy (stress), that is feelings, are stored in the body.  It would be great if we would simply experience and let go of stressful events but it’s easier said than done.  Yoga and therapeutic massage work by their focus on the body and not on the mind, for it is in the body that stressful energy is stored. Yoga postures (or asanas) allow the individual to focus on one area of the body at a time and facilitate the release of negative stored energy (bad feelings).  And whereas yoga is an active release, therapeutic massage is a more passive approach to the same phenomena.  Bodywork enhances CBT psychotherapy by addressing and releasing negative stored energy (pain & stress) from the large muscle groups where they are stored.

Bodywork is a term used in alternative medicine to describe any therapeutic or personal development technique that involves working with the human body in a form involving manipulative therapy, breath work, or energy medicine. In addition bodywork techniques aim to assess or improve posture, promote awareness of the "mind-body connection", or to manipulate a putative "energy field" surrounding the human body and affecting health.

Some of the best known forms of bodywork methods include: Reiki, Yoga, and Tai Chi.

Manipulative bodywork include Chiropractic, Postural Integration (PI), Reflexology, Rolfing, Shiatsu, and others.

The wonderful thing about all forms of bodywork is that the only thing that changes is YOU and your stored energy of stress and pain. These are wonderful modalities for those stresses in life that cannot be changed.  Bodywork allows us to release painful energies and feel restored, even when the cause of such stress (current or past) fundamentally remains the same.
