Meditation

Quiet The Mind
Quieting the mind, or meditation, is a great way to reduce the stress of daily life.  And, like all stress reduction techniques, is a state that can be practiced.  Meditation can be practiced as conscious awareness without thought, or as intense present moment focus.  Either approach stills the “problem solving / generating” stressor which is our thought.  Meditation is fundamental in the practice of yoga where the individual “drops the mind” and moves into the body.

Breathing
Practice focusing on your breathing while you close your eyes... experiencing the ebb and flow of energy as oxygen enters the body and carbon dioxide is expelled.  Feel the chest and abdomen expand and contract.  When you perform such a simple practice, you may notice that thought diminishes.

Focus On Only One Thing
A second form of meditation is intense present moment focus, where the mind and conscious attention are given to only one thing... Creating art, petting your dog or cat, working in the yard, enjoying a hobby, experiencing the sensations in the body during active exercise.  The list of meditative behaviors is endless.  All allow the mind to quiet through the practice of present moment focus.

The one thing stress reduction does require is a little of our busy lives.  Attention (consciousness) always precedes intention (or action).  Give yourself a little break by giving yourself a little time and self love.  Spend a little more time in your body, and a little less time in your head.
